This is my Baba Goldie Lyman's recipe for kamish. What is different about it is the fact that it is made with walnuts instead of almonds. No coconut or chocolate. Just walnuts and cinnamon. It is actually my favourite. Easy to make and delicious.
*** my baba and my mom always made these in metal ice cubes trays ( without the divided part) My mom gave me her trays and I have always made them in these. You can use 2 loaf pans, dividing the batter between them. They are meant to be quite flat.
Here is the recipe
Goldie's Kamish
Ingredients
3/4 cup oil
3/4 cup sugar
3 eggs
1 1/2 cups flour
2 1/2 tsp baking powder
1 tsp cinnamon
1 pinch salt
1 cup finely chopped walnuts
Method
Preheat oven to 350F
Grease 2 loaf pans
1. Mix the oil, sugar and eggs together until completely combined. You can do this by hand or use a mix master
2. In a bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, salt and cinnamon together.
3. Add the flour mixture to the oil, sugar and eggs. Mix well
4. Add the chopped walnuts to the batter and combine well
5. Divide the batter in half and put one half into each prepared loaf pan.
5. Bake for approximately 30 minutes, check to make sure they don't get over- baked. Turn oven off
6. While still hot, slice the kamish into 1 inch slices. Remove from loaf pan using a spatula to gently lift out of the pans and place on a cookie sheet standing up. Put this cookie sheet back in the warm oven and keep the kamish in for at least an hour to dry out
7. Store in a dry place
Enjoy!
